Behind the Scenes, How the Luna bag is made

The Braided Luna Bag has arrived! The journey to bring this bag to life was nothing short of labor of love! It all began with a vision of elevating our handmade artisanal work to a new level and really highlighting the 100% hand crafted elements of our handbags.

Inspired by the success of our Sera macarame bag, I wanted to fuse both weaving and braiding so that ANYONE who saw the Luna bag could instantly understand these bags are made by hand and represent artisanal craftsmanship in its highest form. In a world where we are so removed from the production process of how our clothes and accessories are made, I hope these bags become a reminder that almost everything we wear is still made by human hands.

Like all of our bags, the Luna started by receiving and sorting ALOT of reclaimed leather off cuts. I received beautiful blacks, neutrals and whites and knew that I had to make something special. I was also so excited to utilize a new weave that our weaving artisan Francesca brought to me. At only 5mm strips, this weave is even more intricate than our original.

For the shape I wanted something equally appropriate for day and night. A form that was comfortable under the arm for long days running around town or looked elegant and sleek all dressed up. A shape that could hold everything I needed but didn’t look (in the words of Tom from Succession, “capacious”) Cue the crescent shaped bags, one of the most comfortable and timeless silhouettes. However, of course I had to put our versatile Sieme spin onto it by adding a removable handle, adjustable crossbody straps and removable fringe detail.

Thank

The Luna bag represents three different artisan factories.

First I collaborating with a guardilifio, (a leather cording factory) to transform leather scraps into luxurious cords, braiding each by hand to form the braided handle

Second, our artisan weaving collective crafted the front and back panels in our new vertical weave as well as a few special white panels in our original diagonal weave. (seriously, only 5 white bags were made!)

And third, I have partnered with a (new to Sieme) local family owned factory to assemble and sew all of the bags. Traditionally they have worked exclusively for Ferragamo but now are expanding to support emerging designers. Their quality and craftsmanship is truly unmatched.

The result? A masterpiece that exceeds even my highest expectations –seriously, this is my favorite bag I have ever made! The Luna bag is lightweight, so comfortable under your arm, with the perfect space between the braided handle and the top of the bag. The zipper closure is secure and the mixture of textures, braiding, weaving and fringe is so elegant and unique.

You may have felt light you have seen this bag for a while. In full transparency, I was hoping to release this bag for the holiday (yep, the ones in 2023). However, I refused to compromise on quality or rush the production process and when we hit a few obstacles, it was more important for me to get it right. As a brand committed to sustainability and timeless style, I try to prioritize excellence over arbitrary fashion calendars and luckily, that commitment to mindful designs means our colors are season-less and perfect for wearing all year round anyway!

The Sieme Braided Luna Bag is now available exclusively online, with only 35 in total. 15 black, 15 cognac and 5 in white (with some already claimed!). Don't miss your chance to own this truly special artisanal statement bag. And a huge thank you for your unwavering support. It inspires me to continue pushing the boundaries of creativity and upcycled luxury one piece of rescued leather at a time.

Happy Shopping!

With love from Florence,
